Effect of automatic engine stop/start on driving technique

Having had the car for a couple of months now, I am starting to get the feel of most things, but am still disturbed by the 'Intelligent Stop/Start' where the engine stops at traffic lights and in queues. I still cannot reliably forecast when it will happen; and when pulling away after it restarts, the vehicle sometimes feels as though it is going to stall.
Has anyone with more experience of these systems (this is my first car fitted with it) any suggestions or advice?

Ken

Hyundai subjects i30 to 10-hour baboon torture

Korean cars are sometimes unfairly criticised for being less well built than their Western counterparts. Hyundai dispelled this myth in some style recently, though, when it allowed a huge gang of baboons to run amok in its i30 family hatchback.
The baboons were chosen due to their natural curiosity and unrivalled ability to destroy things.
The bizarre 'endurance test' was designed to show the Hyundai i30's resilience to the strains of day-to-day life. The car was parked in the baboon enclosure at Knowsley Safari Park, where the residents (who once tore apart Wayne Rooney's Audi RS6 Quattro) set about it every which way but loose.

They jumped up and down on the seats, pushed and prodded buttons and opened and closed storage bins. Some baboons ate food off the car's fabric seats, some played with their monkey toys in the boot, while others did their best to smear and scrape the car's paintwork.

By all accounts, the Hyundai i30 coped very well. After 10 hours of punishment, it emerged 'virtually unscathed'.

Felicity Wood, i30 product manager at Hyundai said: "You have to be pretty brave to subject a car to the most rigorous quality testers in the world, and the monkeys certainly gave our new generation i30 a thorough examination! The fact that it survived with only a few scrapes is testament to the way a modern Hyundai is designed and engineered. We really do give a monkey’s about building tough cars!”

David Ross, General Manager at Knowsley Park, meanwhile, said "For a baboon, to have a car to play with for a whole day is manna from heaven! I’ve seen thousands of cars pass through this enclosure, get mobbed by monkeys, and none have lasted the distance as well as this Hyundai. These baboons are incredibly inquisitive. If you put them on any car they will scour it for the weak points and find any faults. At one point there were 40 monkeys in the car, pushing it to its limits -- that’s ten times the size of the average human family!”

Hyundai has repaid the monkeys for their invaluable assistance by donating £1,000 to one of Knowsley’s supported charities, the Primate Society of Great Britain.

Images:
The i30 was subjected to 10 hours of this.

Original story and some great pics here: http://recombu.com/cars/news/hyundai-su … rture.html

No doubt there will be a very low mileage "ex management" car on a forecourt soon!

Newbie with a (probably) stupid question

Hi there,

Sorry to just come crashing in with a stupid girl's question. I am looking at Santa Fe's to tow with (the very early ones as not much ££s) and I am getting pretty confused.

Parkers tell me that the 2.0L TD has a tow capacity of 2300kg but that the 2.0L CRTD only 1870kg. Google seems to imply that the TD engine was upgraded to the CRTD engine at some point in 2003 but plenty of 2002 models seem to have it in? Is any of this correct so far?! Are there even two different engines? Most people seem to advertise as 2.0L TD but when I click into pictures they have CRTD emblazoned all over the tailgate. Told you I was a stupid girl!

Can anyone help me clear this up? My local dealership are part of a hopeless franchise (couldn't even tell me which power steering fluid to put in my car when I asked them) so don't hold out much hope of getting a sensible answer from them frankly!

Did you buy a Hyundai for the 5 year warranty?

Before you consider buying ANY Hyundai product, please read about my experience!

I have just taken my car into Richmond Hyundai Portsmouth to have it checked as the clutch had FAILED. The car has covered 18,000 miles, is in daily gentle use and has NEVER shown the slightest sign of clutch wear whatsoever, no slipping clutch, no change in clutch pedal travel, no baulking gear changes, nothing.

The car has FHSH and had just been into Richmond Hyundai Portsmouth, for a full service not 6 weeks and less than 1000 miles before and there was no mention of clutch issues, because there weren't any. The service manager at Richmond, then told me that the reason the clutch wouldn't engage was that the clutch had "welded" itself to the pressure plate with rust, and asked whether the car had been left for several weeks parked in a flood!

Of course I explained that it had never been parked in a flood and the car is in daily use, which I can happily prove with our CCTV. He then asked me whether the car had been driven through any water? Well, as I live in the UK which has just had the wettest April for 100 years, I would have to admit that yes, it has been driven through puddles.

This apparently, may be the cause!!!! I may not be an automotive engineer but, in my humble opinion if the Hyundai i30 is supposed to be driven only in dry conditions, then I would suggest that it should only be sold in particularly arid countries and certainly not in the UK which is quite prone to rain. Richmond Hyundai told me that this is not going to be covered by warranty as the clutch is showing wear and therefore cannot be a warranty claim.

The clutch is showing wear? I'm sure all clutches that have been installed in a car will show wear if the car has been used at all, it is a part that is designed to wear. This is nothing to do with clutch wear, it is to do with the clutch FAILING due to a design fault or manufacturing defect, or is it normal for the clutch to “weld” itself to the pressure plate with rust? So, Richmond Hyundai want me to pay £630.00 to repair this failure, which I absolutely refuse to do.

They asked me to authorise them to put the car back together, so that this cost can then be fully incurred. I will not. If this is how they treat customers, when their clutch fails due to being rusted to the pressure plate, even though it is only 3 years old, done 18,000 miles, is in daily use and has never been in a flood, then I will be obliged to take whatever action necessary to get this resolved satisfactorily and to inform other Hyundai customers and potential customers of A. this "dry use only" clutch problem and B.

The way Richmond Hyundai and Hyundai UK deal with issues like this. I will also take this to the Trading Standards and if necessary to court as I absolutely refuse, on principal, to pay for what is obviously either a design fault, manufacturing defect or downright shoddy manufacturing or materials.

I have spoken to Hyundai UK’s customer care department and after speaking to Richmond Hyundai Portsmouth, they have also refused a warranty claim.
