Picked up my i30 CRDi last week and have been reading the owners manual and got to the engine oil top up, they recommend Shell Helix 5w-30 so off I pop to the shell garage (I always use shell petrol / diesel) Shock Horror for 1lt of oil £17.99 so it was off for a search anyway got a litre from the guys below and they also do the 5l for services. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? … K:MEWAX:ITHope it won't need much topping up but best to have a bottle just incase.i30Sean.

I've never (in 2 years) needed to add a single drop. But the oil you linked to is the correct one (and a decent price)
Anyone know what oil the dealers use ?i30Sean
If you seriously want oil like this then contact me. Dealers probably use 5/40 Helix
The Helix 5/40 is not ACEA C3 type and I had read that should a warranty claim be put in for engine damage oil is tested. This may be of course complete Bo**ocks ???i30Sean.
I thought that too and my dealer put helix 10-40 in my Tucson when I have been using edge 5-30 full synthetic -When I questioned it they rang Hyundai to check and they said it was ok- So I phoned Hyundai Technical and they said it was ok to use this part synthetic oil -so who do we believe now- The book that says it must be to C3 spec or the B Manufacturer who has changed the spec without informing anyone.?
Can someone place a scan of the oil recommendation page from the handbook here and any other Hyundai model
I new I read it somewherehttp://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/inde … 682.0.htmli30SeanPS Will scan it on in 5 mins
When I scan it on it looks blur so have put a link instead !i30seanPS Sorry it's not straight!

I had a couple of vectras as company cars many years ago,a 1.8 petrol, used to leak oil but never needed topping up, after that I had a 2.2 diesel that needed a litlre per 1,000 miles on average.
Thanks for putting the pic on it looks clear but if you zoom your view to 150% is easily read.Cheers I30Sean
Only if you lay down to read it Bet you were using your laptop whilst in bed last night Either that or you were tanked up
I had a Metro some 30 years ago and that used more oil than petrol!Never any signs of leaks but I was forever topping up.
Likewise eye30, I had a very old Austin 7 about fifty years ago (bought for £5) that used a litre of oil every 30 miles!

I have just received a postcard from my Hy dealer to remind me that my 1st service is due. On the front of the card is a picture of a hand holding a tray. On the tray is a litre bottle of Castrol (indeterminate grade). Suppose it is too much to assume they may use Castrol?

Just had my first service. I was right about the Castrol. Invoice shows Castrol GTX Professional 10w-40 whatever that is.I queried with the dealer whether the oil should be C3 but he insisted that it did not need that grade and that semi synthetic is Ok.Still not convinced!
I will ring Hyundai soon to get this sorted
My dealer has always said C3 for my i30 crdi and that is what is put in.
Hyundai and the dealers are changing tune on this I too queried this after my service having been charged for synthetic prices and only recieved semi synthetic (Well thats what it seemed like when I can get full syntheytic cheaper than their semi synthetic Grrr)Dealer rang Hyundai to check and I rang Hyundai to check and they now say semi is ok. But C3 in the manual means full synthetic- My dealer has agreed to change this oil at no cost- pretty fair I say all things considered.Still remains that on synthetic oil I get 4mpg more than with semi synthetic.itza
I think Hyundai UK should email or send a letter to every dealer and ensure that the correct oil is used. This is costing the dealers and could cause a bit of difficulty as the customer is having to question the dealer.Admin perhaps this would be good coming from you?i30Sean.

I E-mailed Hyundai Customer services yesterday re. which oil to use in CRDi, ACEA C3 or something cheaper?I got a phone call this morning from them. They told me that in is not necessary to use fully synthetic oil and that the only criteria was that it should be 10W-30 or 10W-40. They also said that the oil used when the service was done, Castrol GTX Professional 10W-40 was perfectly acceptable. How come we seem to have gone from needing possibly the most expensive oil on the market to anything which meets viscosity range 10W-30 or 10W-40? Doesn't make any sense to me!!
I think until we see this in writing I will stick to the expensive stuff, after all, it's only about an extra £10 every 10,000 miles, and I am sure it provides some benefit to the engine/economy?

Better mpg and smoother running I think but as said above why in the hell have they changed their minds now? Pressure from the dealer -No they make more out of it but they are charging ott for 10W 40 Pro- shouldn't be able to mark it up by 100%+ should they?itza
