UPDATED i30 COMING TO A DEALERSHIP NEAR YOU.


The hugely successful Hyundai i30 range has been given a major update for 2010. New engines and trim levels will make Hyundai's big seller even more accessible and further reduce running costs for private and company drivers alike.

As a further bonus, Intelligent Stop & Go technology (ISG) will be introduced as a special order option, bringing impressive tax and fuel savings to both private and company buyers.

A new model in the range - named Classic - will be the new entry level Hyundai i30, available with the popular 1.4-litre petrol engine and a new 1.6-litre CRDi diesel with 90PS. Both have an impressive specification including ESP, air conditioning and electric front windows. The Hyundai i30 Classic 1.4 costs just £12,000 (at the new higher 17.5 % VAT rate) while the Classic 1.6 CRDi costs £12,950, reducing the price of the cheapest Hyundai i30 diesel by £1,140.

The new Hyundai i30 Comfort model costs just £700 more than the Classic and adds electric rear windows, steering wheel audio controls and - new for 2010 - a leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob plus 16" alloy wheels. The Comfort is expected to be the biggest seller in the Hyundai i30 range and is available with 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and a 115PS 1.6-litre diesel. Both 1.6-litre engines are also available with an automatic gearbox.

The price of the range-topping Premium has been realigned, making it up to £1,200 cheaper than its predecessor. Now available from £14,750, the Premium package still features a high specification such as 17" alloy wheels, reversing sensors and climate control. The full leather upholstery of the 2009 model year car is replaced by half leather trim, although full leather is still a £650 option - which still makes a 2010 Premium with full leather over £500 cheaper than before.

These prices mean obvious savings for private buyers - the Hyundai i30 1.6 petrol Comfort is a massive £4,670 cheaper than the entry-level 1.6 Ford Focus. But company car drivers will also find they can save hundreds in tax by choosing an i30 over rival hatchbacks thanks to lower list prices and emissions levels.

For those wanting even bigger savings, Intelligent Stop & Go technology (ISG) has also been introduced as a £200 option on all Hyundai i30 models with manual transmission for the first time, giving improvements in fuel economy of up to 10 percent on the hatchback and 14 percent on the Estate.

Adding ISG drops CO2 emissions of the new Hyundai i30 Classic 1.6 CRDi 90PS from 115 to 110 g/km, allowing businesses to write down 100 percent of their capital write-down allowance in the first year. For drivers wanting more carrying capacity, the CO2 emissions of the Comfort 1.6 CRDi 115PS Estate shrink from 124 to 119 g/km, saving customers £85 per year in road tax and dropping company car drivers from 18 percent to 13 percent benefit-in-kind.

The new Hyundai i30 range will officially go on sale from 4th January 2010, with orders being taken now.

HYUNDAI i20 GETS FIVE STAR NCAP RATING

The Hyundai i20 was awarded the maximum five-star score in the first round of tests using the organisation's new rating system. Setting a new standard in the supermini segment, the Hyundai i20 five-door model scored exceptionally well in all four categories assessed - adult occupancy, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

Notably the i20 scored 88 per cent in the adult occupant protection tests, including the new whiplash assessment. The car’s standard active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners and six airbags – front, side and curtain – played a key role in achieving success in the NCAP tests for frontal, side barrier and car-to-pole impacts.

Crucially the i20 scored an impressive six out of a maximum seven points in the ‘safety assist’ category, receiving top marks for its seatbelt reminder and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). ESP helps to minimise the risk of skidding by applying brakes to individual wheels to direct the car where the driver wishes to go. Euro NCAP now insists that 85 per cent of volume sales should be fitted with ESP as standard before a new car can be eligible for a five-star rating.

The exceptional result for child protection will be of particular interest to family motorists. The i20 scored 41 out of a possible 49 points, easily beating all the other cars in its class plus mini-MPVs including the new Citroen C3 Picasso. It even puts the i20 above larger cars including the Vauxhall Insignia and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

HYUNDAI SALES SOAR DUE TO SCRAPPAGE SCHEME

Hyundai sales last month leapt up 36.61 percent to 3,325, making it the fastest-growing major car manufacturer in Britain. Overall car sales for the total market fell 24.77 percent for the month.

Although some of Hyundai’s success can be attributed to the scrappage scheme – which came into operation on 18th May – there was also a rise in non-scrappage customers, proving there is an underlying demand for the company’s products.

Take out fleet sales and only count the ‘retail’ sector of the market and Hyundai’s performance is even more impressive, taking a 3.82 percent market share. That’s enough to put the company in 11th place overall, overtaking Nissan and snapping at the heels of Citroën and BMW.
