Title: Towing with a Car - know what you can tow
Post by: Mark on September 16, 2016, 21:15:03
Just thought I would post this for general info..............

There was a post on North West Motorway Police Facebook page tonight about what you can tow with a car and what type of licence you need.

This was a surprise to me (luckily I am legal) as i had not heard of there being such restrictions.

Hope you find it useful

That official website had several errors in it until recently - it's taken years to get them to correct it.

You can't actually rely on gov.co.uk website information for legal matters - be warned.

I used the one from the Motorway Police link.

I agree you have to be careful but you would hope the NWMP would give good info.

You'd hope that DVLA/DVSA would give accurate motoring info but they don't always - what's worse is that when an error creeps in it can take them years of complaints from "anoraks" to get the website corrected.

eg - From 1997 to 2013 anyone passing their car test was limited to towing an outfit of 3500 kg total, as now, but were also limited to towing a trailer less than 100% of the car's kerbweight - this 100% restriction was withdrawn with the 2013 revisions but it took 2 years of complaints to DVLA to get them to remove it from the website, partly because they argued they were right but had to back down in the end.

There's no guaranteed source of motoring law on the internet - the nearest you'll get is Stones' Justices Manual in courts and public libraries - but even magistrates and solicitors find it hard going!

Thanks for your views.

I didn't intend to cause any confusion with post.

Feel free to remove it or lock it if you think it's going to mislead anyone.

I wasn't trying to knock your efforts - I know how much of a minefield towing law is - many recent drivers are given the impression they aren't allowed to tow at all without taking a towing test - and I have come across inaccurate information from lecturers on Speed Awareness Courses (don't ask!)
