Car Insurance Renewal
« on: February 19, 2016, 17:59:05 »
Received my renewal letter today and besides the price increasing by 22% they have also increased the excess on window screen replacement from £75 to £90

AND

Repair from £zero to £10.

Will need to be aware of this and check the T&C's/excesses when I get quotes from other insurers.

Any others finding insurers are changing excess this year?
I'm no expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong

Most policies are great the first year, they try and prey on laziness by increasing costs for no reason. Every year I've been able to pay about the same, but only by changing insurers each time...

That sounds horrendous,  have you tried adding a named driver? That normally makes a big difference.

If anyone wants evidence of a Cartel look no further than the Car Insurance market. Shopping around you'll see that they're all moving away from zero excess anything. Churchill even charge now for making changes to your policy and also for sending out replacement documentation.

Thanks for that advice I had heard that and did another quote with my wife as a named driver (not primary) and the price dropped by £1000 !!! Still looking at around £1100 for the insurance.

Be careful with those monitoring box things. Though they may shave some money off, you make a mistake in your estimated mileage and you're in trouble. A lass at work completely misjudged her annual mileage - as soon as she hit it early, the box grassed her up and cancelled her remaining insurance, she lost about £1,000 (she had just passed too).

Just looked around for quotes for my renewal and some insurers are counting windscreen repairs as a claim! Another back door to raise the quote.

Well after searching for other prices, the renewal was the best I could find, unless I wanted to increase my excess from £Nil to say £100 but the saving was circa £15!
Even at £500 the saving was circa £35!
Plus I would have to add legal protection cover to the price.

Rang up insurers and pressed the "I want to leave" button.

Reasons given for the increase - high claims due to flood, fraud etc and the increase in premium tax.

Anyway as I was about to say OK lets renew they knocked £15 off.

After a few more ....... well I don't know, may be I can get better elsewhere, how much if I took off my son etc etc........ I decided to stay as with any other insurer I would have to pay for legal cover at £20 to £30 a year.

So renewed for another 12 months.

Now to sort out the MOT and service in May

register with quidco, then go to the selected insurers,  last year got £120 cash back on two policies with aviva.

Just renewed the i20 through quidco as a new policy not a renewal and another £50 cash back on its way.

play this game every year for both cars

What "cartel" ?

Insurance companies have to bear the costs of all the accidents and claims that occur - that's what keeps insurance premiums high.

Everyone knows they can shop around, but not everyone does - happens in all walks of life.

The cheaper insurers have charged for changes and paper documentation for a long time - would you rather they charged even higher premiums and provided all services free ?
