Frustrating Day Hyundai Dealer
« on: April 23, 2016, 18:44:09 »
So I have had a really frustrating and disappointing day and feel shattered.

I have been looking to purchase an i10 or i20 for my daughter (learning to drive test soon) and have been scouring the country and was prepared to travel any distance for the right car. After weeks of searching and multiple calls from dealers etc.... I found a car in Leicester that ticked the boxes (a few more miles on, than I wanted but my daughter won't drive that many miles so will even out) Full service history Active model silver and a good price.

My wife, daughter and I drove up early this morning and the car looked and was just what we wanted, the front tyres were a little low but legal and the windscreen had a resign repair but I have haggled on price so was reasonably happy.

Was just about to get my debit card out and the sales man went off to get the machine and I asked to look at the service book (thank god!!!)

The car was registered in December 2013 first service carried out in December 2014 at 11,600mls, in time but 10,000ml services so ok a little over then second service in December 2015 on time but the miles were 24,500mls well over the 20,000ml service requirements. After much discussion and phone calls to service manager dealer principle etc... I got my deposit back and left very disappointed.

My argument was should the gear box fail / major engine problem then the warranty would not be valid as the services although on time didn't meet the mileage so the car has clearly not been carried out under the Hyundai schedule, 1 year or 10K 2 year 20K etc... the dealer tried all manner of ways to get me to buy the car but I'm afraid we drove home in one car not two with a disappointed daughter and not happy wife!!!

So am I being unreasonable or not, what would you have done?

The search continues for a actual full service history car with a warranty

Hi
We have a 2010 I10 and the service intervals are first service at 10,000, then 12500 intervals afterwards.
You were right to walk away as I found they will reject a claim for any reason.

You did exactly the right thing.

A close friend had a Santa Fe, bought from a franchised dealer at 3yrs old, but he neglected to check the service history. Only when the turbo unit blew 6 months later, did he find out to his horror that the service history was not complete. The car was previously owned by a major leasing company and he just assumed they would have done all the servicing on time or at the correct mileage. The car was even on sale from the original supplying dealer and they  conveniently 'kept quiet' about the incomplete history when they sold him the vehicle. They later denied all knowledge!.

Thus he had to pay for a new (well reconditioned) turbo as the dealer and Hyundai UK pointed out the late services and declined to do the work under warranty. The best he got was a 30% discount!.

He sold it on pretty quickly as once the warranty is voided, even in the early years, the full 5 year warranty cover is also voided.

So as you did, checking the service history is mega important.

Hi Piskoty, I did think about your one as I had looked back at your post a few months back. I wanted a newer one TBH. I had looked at several 2014 ones and got one a with 16K on clock, Active model with two stamps in the book with all the paperwork for a good price.

Great it's been serviced, all be it late, but the warranty will be a problem. Shame you had to travel all that way to see it!
