Servicing i40 without using hyundai dealer
« on: May 31, 2017, 16:24:37 »
I recently left my 2015 hyundai i40 crdi into my local hyundai dealer for its second service. 36000 miles.
Oil change
Filters
Brake fluid etc.
I have a service plan which I have now cancelled.
On returning home me and a mechanic friend inspected the work carried out.
Brake fluid was overfilled to the top of reservoir.
Oil level was 1.2ltrs overfilled and had to be removed.
I drove 1000 miles to make sure.
Air filter was not seated properly.
I do not wish to take my car back to this dealer but my
Only other hyundai dealer is 60 miles away.
I have always serviced my cars myself previously
Will using another dealer (not hyundai) affect my waranty.
Or am I stuck with redoing a service I spent £300 + on
Everytime that I can do for £100 just to keep my warranty.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

But don't expect any goodwill if you need warranty work that's marginal or just outside the time/mileage limits.

I'd make an appointment with the service manager, by name, and meet with him outlining all the OP's concerns - they can't put the errors right, that's been done elsewhere but they should be able to state what's being done to stop it in future - and then have all work booked through the service manager - it worked for me!

Hi. Thanks for the replies.
Warranty doesn't cover much anyway after 60k
Not worth worrying about.
Think I'll get rid before next service.

The Hyundai Warranty is 5-year unlimited mileage.

Have you a local Kia dealer? Most of the parts are the same, shouldn't cause you any warranty queries.
Having the balance of the 5 years will help with the value of your car when it comes to selling.

Hi. Thanks for that.
I think I'll have a chat with the kia dealer .
As for Piscoty thanks for the reply
But the unlimited 5 year warranty doesn't cover
Everything if you read the booklet.
Clutch  24 months or 60000 miles
Brake linings 24 months or 20000 miles
V belts 24 months or 100000 miles
Wheel bearings 60 months or 60000 miles
Ball joints 60 months or 60000 miles
Bushes 60 months or 60000 miles
Track rods 60 months or 60000 miles
Shocks 60 months or 60000 miles
All rubber components 60 months or 60000 miles

As I do @ 25k a year my 5 year warranty runs out for all of this
Stuff in 2 and a half years.
The reason I bought the car was for the warranty.
As I was told it covered everything at the time I bought it.
Next time I'm asking for the service books to read before
I buy a car.
On saying that I have 45K up now on my late 2015 i40
With no problems at all , touch wood.
Thanks again for the replies. Warranty

Warranty is there to cover unexpected failure - not normal wear and tear - but since "normal" varies from driver to driver, it's good that the wearing items have a pre-defined time or mileage limitation.

Warranty isn't a maintenance contract!

Yes. You are right.
I was just saying that not everything is covered.
I've had no complaints about reliability.
Just the first post about the service.
Overfilling oil etc.
If my car had sprung an oil leak they could say it was me that overfilled it therefore voiding warranty.
But it was their mechanics lax attitude or lack of training that would have caused it if I hadn't have checked everything after.
Just a bit miffed I paid £300 for service I had to fix myself.
I have to work to a high quality standard in my work,
It just annoys me when someone else takes my hard earned for
sub standard work.
They must have at least dipped the oil and would have seen the level was an inch above top fill level.
Could go into a rant but wouldn't do any good .
No more dealer services for me thank you .

Dealer workshop standards do vary widely - that's a general comment, not just about Hyundai but all brands below the Rolls-Royce/Bentley level.

I sympathise with you entirely, Stuart.
I too have entrusted my local dealer to do the services over the past 4 yrs and ALWAYS check what has been done and have provided all consumables to boot!
I have been disappointed with every service and am on first name terms with most of the staff now! They cringe when they see me........but, like Ruperts T., I decided to play safe and not give Hyundai any 'wriggle room' with warranty and have 'enjoyed' a little goodwill from Hyundai HQ over parking brake failure after the dealer flatly refused to submit to HQ.
And don't forget to ask for compensation after shoddy servicing.....I have enough air/oil filters to last the life of the car!  :-)

From what I'm hearing hyundai dealers are not great at servicing.
The manager was very patronising ,
They also told me the front brake pads were at 50%.
And lo and behold 4k later they're nearly down to the metal.
Only noticed as I got tyres yesterday.
I thought 50% was meant half worn, not "we will tell you they're half and when they scrape the disc next month we'll charge you for discs as well."
Not worth complaining , last time I was there I had to wait an hour to get my car back from them after a scheduled service with a collection time. I'd say if I was complaining I'd have to book a few days off work to wait for someone to see me.

I only had experience of three Hyundai dealers - and only one of those for servicing - can't fault two of them so it's not across the board.

Just got a text from dealer saying my free vehicle health check is due.
They flagged up brake pads may be in need of replacement at a cost of £127 plus vat .
I got pads and fitted them for £30.
.in less than a hour.
How can they justify this price for parts that are not covered by warranty after 24k anyway.

Across all brands, not just Hyundai, "health checks" exist solely to generate sales opportunities.

£30 for brake pads sounds like cheap pattern parts - personally I'd look to save money on labour charges not the OE parts.
